DTF printing vs screen printing — which to choose for apparel?

If you plan to print a t-shirt, hoodie or bag, the choice is often between DTF printing and screen printing. Both are high quality but suit different needs. Here is how to choose.

What is DTF printing?

DTF (Direct to Film) is a digital print where the design is first printed on a special film and then heat-transferred onto the fabric. It is a full-colour method — great for any design with many colours, gradients and photos.

The main benefit: DTF is cost-effective even for small quantities — even a single item. No screens are needed, so there are no setup costs.

What is screen printing?

Screen printing (silkscreen) is a classic method where a separate stencil is made for each colour, and ink is pushed through it onto the fabric. It is very durable and economical for large runs in one or a few colours.

There is a one-time screen setup cost, so screen printing pays off when printing many identical items.

How to choose?

Choose DTF if: the design is colourful or photographic, the quantity is small (1–20 pcs), or you want it fast with no setup cost.

Choose screen printing if: you print a large run (e.g. 30+ identical shirts) in one or a few colours and want a lower price per piece.

What about durability?

Both methods are wash-resistant if you follow care instructions (wash inside out, not too hot, do not iron directly over the print). Quality DTF printing lasts many wash cycles, screen printing — even longer on large runs.
